After a full forehead 'smack' on the bedroom slide (yes, I did see stars), we got a swim noodle! Cut it in half, slice it down the side...and put it on the front and back of the slide. Leave a couple of inches hang down...while you walk by, your brain "sees" it...if not, it's a great cushion!
Oh yes...be sure to remove prior to bringing in the slide!

I do the same as the above comment for my awning supports. Still hit them but it doesn't hurt as much. Wearing a ball cap often obscures them from my line of site.
For edges of the slide-out, we use insulation that is normally used for 1/2-inch copper [plumbing] pipe - it comes in 6-foot lengths, is easy to cut to length, and is already sliced length-wise for fitting on the narrow edge of the slide-out. Not as obtrusive as swim noodles, but just as effective. Home Depot, Lowes, or???
