This is just the same as pressing the "test" button, only with this model it can be done remotely. It tests the alarm's battery and noise generator, but doesn't actually determine whether the device is still able to sense Carbon Monoxide.
To do this you need to light a match or lighter in close proximity to the sensor. This is potentially DANGEROUS, so be VERY CAREFUL not to set anything on fire, or melt something, or soot up the alarm. Also, if you use a match, have some kind of a container to set it in when it burns out. The match generates the most CO as it is starting to burn out. Also, be prepared to listen to the loud, obnoxious alarm for several minutes until it resets; earplugs are helpful. You may be able to clear the CO out of the alarm faster if you fan it with a flat piece of cardboard, or use a hair dryer set to the "Fan" (no heat) setting.
Unfortunately, these First Alert CO detectors break down young. Mine lasted less than a year before going to a permenent "Err" message.
Kidde Nighthawk has a much better track record.
